Yellowfin Tuna Fishing

Are you an avid fisherman and want a challenge? Fishing for yellowfin tuna would be the perfect challenge. There are several reasons that make them such a deviant catch.

Yellowfin tunas are beautiful fish and very powerful swimmers. It looks very similar to other types of tuna, but has a few differentiating characteristics. One is the pectoral fin, which reaches to the beginning of the second dorsal fin. Their color is a bit more yellow and shiny than other tunas. Yellowfins also have smooth livers and gill rakers of 27-33. Also, they are found in the warmer waters of the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans.

Yellowfin tuna fishing is challenging due to the deviant nature of the tuna, being the toughest to catch with a rod and reel. Contributing factors, along with their large size, are their ability to get away being powerful swimmers. First of all, you need to go offshore at least 20 miles to find suitable water temperatures for yellowfins. Recommended ways to catch yellowfish are trolling and chumming. The color green attracts yellowfins and is a popular choice in lure color. With trolling, you are dangling the multiple lures, flashy in color, in the boat wake while moving less than 10 miles per hour. Chumming is using the bait hook and also throwing pieces of bait in the water around the area you are fishing. The preferred choice of bait fish by Outdoor Adventures Guide is butterfish or silver hake. Chumming also works best when anchored or drifting. Rods and reels that are 30, 50 or 80 are the ultimate choice due to the yellowfins’ size. Once the yellowfin is on the hook, the fisherman should change to the stand up fishing technique. This is done when the fisherman transfers his rod to a gimbal belt, so that he can reel the fish in. Fighting with the yellowfin, especially a large one will cause you to tire quickly.

Yellowfin tuna fishing is a challenge and an adrenaline rush for sure, as they are large and hard to catch. Just having one on your hook gives you an elated feeling.
