Why Moderation is the Key to Preventing Gout

Last night was a night I won’t soon forget. A few days ago, I had been invited to my friend’s going away party. He was in the army and was getting ready to get stationed overseas. I went overboard trying to celebrate his departure and last night was my body “thanking” me for treating it so well the night of the party.
I woke up to an excruciating gout attack. My ankle was swollen like a watermelon and it felt like someone poured hot coals into my foot. Now I am stuck in bed because I can’t handle putting any pressure on my ankle. I also had to call in sick to work. At the time I didn’t mind eating the several hamburgers as well as drinking all the extra drinks that sometimes accompany these festive send offs, but now I wish I had been smarter. I have attended past send offs and was careful with what I ate and drank and I avoided an attack.
It didn’t help that earlier today I mowed my lawn. Normally I have my son mow the lawn, but I figured I needed to get a workout to try and work off the food and drink fest I had at the party, so I got out the mower and went to work. Unfortunately, my yard is two acres and about a quarter of my yard is uphill. I knew better, that is why I have my son mow my lawn. I am quite a bit overweight and have had problems before with gout when I overdo it.
As I lay here suffering from painful gout symptoms, I can confidently tell you that I am a perfect example of what not to do if you want to know how to prevent gout. If you suffer regularly from gout and over eat foods that can cause gout such as hamburgers and drink alcohol in excess, you are almost assured of a gout attack.
If you are overweight and have gout, pushing yourself too hard physically will also probably give you a gout attack. All the extra weight puts too much pressure on your lower joints. Eat and drink in moderation, take it easy, and build yourself up to a comfortable level of fitness. This is why moderation is the key to preventing gout.
