Why it’s a Good Idea to Grow Your Own Organic Vegetables
Health and Wellness, The Great Outdoors

The use of pesticides, herbicides, additives and synthetic fertilizers, known as mechanization and homogenization, allows farmers to mass produce our food supply. But at what cost to our health? What may be seen as progress in conventional farming has affected mankind’s health in a detrimental way. The rapid spreading of diseases among human and animals are occurring (bird flu being a recent example).
In studies performed by the World Health Organization, the threats to human health posed by these farming practices are very real. You can avoid the dangers of these chemicals by growing your own organic vegetable garden. Whether you have a terrace or an acre of land, you can grow your own healthy, organic vegetables.
Not convinced or don’t want to put in the effort? Here are 5 reasons that may change your mind:
1. Additives will not be present in your food. Herbicides, pesticides and other additives can cause ailments such as migraines, hyperactivity, heart diseases, and osteoporosis. Growing your own will spare you of these.
2. Your harvest will not contain synthetic fertilizers.
3. Your vegetables will not be genetically modified (GM). Antibiotics, drugs, and hormones are commonly used by conventional growers in order to produce a more abundant crop of larger vegetables. The results are vegetables that all look alike but lack flavor. The hormones contained in these vegetables pose potential health risks as well.
4. Organic vegetables that you grow yourself are healthier. Along with avoiding all of the additives, your home grown veggies will be freshly picked and packed with nutrients. By slashing the time it takes to get your food from the garden to your plate, vitamin content will not be depleted and your veggies will taste better.
5. You can be eco-friendly by growing your own organic garden. Your carbon footprint can be reduced by your contribution to sustainability – both for yourself and our planet. You may live in a community where neighbors come together to exchange their harvest. This practice creates a planet that is more harmonious.
