It is possible to buy curtains that can end up saving you money. This may seem like an impossible concept when you look at an ad for blackout curtains for sale but it is actually quite a simple one and if the curtains are properly hung they can save money both when the weather is warm and when it is cool. The curtains are blackout curtains and they are an effective way of completely blocking out the sun from the outside while retaining the heat in winter from the inside.
Blackout curtains are invariably multi-layered curtains that, when drawn shut, form a barrier across the window. The primary goal of using these curtains is to darken the room sufficiently to allow someone to sleep during the day. This is ideal for shift-workers and young children who need to get their sleep at daytime. The curtains work so well that in a closed room the darkness can almost be absolute.
Due to the insulating layers of blackout curtains they are also very effective for repelling the sun during the summer. A room that has been darkened by blackout curtains can also end up a lot cooler than a room that sports thin curtains in the window. Instead of repelling the sunlight it will simply stream through the curtains to warm the room.
These properties work just as well in the winter when outside temperatures have dropped. By drawing the curtains tightly over the windows you will reduce the amount of heat that will escape the room through the glass of the windows. In a typical room the amount of heat loss through the windows can reach as high as 80%. Drawing blackout curtains will reduce the amount of heat loss by up to 30%.
This then translates into a reduction in the energy required to either heat or cool your house. The air conditioner won’t have to run for as long or the heaters won’t be going full blast in an effort to keep the room warm. The end result is an energy bill that has been slashed compared to the one you will have seen before you picked up your blackout curtains.
