Points to Ponder When Buying a New Pair of Sunglasses

If you’re on the lookout for new sunglasses, then chances are you already know what style you want and what looks good on you.  It’s also possible that you may not have a clue on what to look for.  If this is the case, then here are some pointers that can help you out:

  • Ask yourself why you need new sunglasses.  Are your old ones broken or out of date?  Perhaps you require eyewear for a sport you will soon engage in.
  • Ask yourself what exactly you’ll wear the new sunglasses for.  Is it for driving? For walking on the beach?  Or for fishing or playing golf?
  • Identify the shape of your face.  Knowing this can trim your choices.  The general rules are:  (a) the frame size should be proportional to the face’s size. Smaller frames work for smaller faces, and larger ones look good on larger faces.  (b) Curved faces should wear angular glasses, and angular faces should wear curved-shaped ones.
  • Your next pair should give you lots of protection from the sun’s glare and UV rays.  It’s important that you’re still able to see clearly and your vision and color comprehension aren’t distorted.
  • Think carefully about what color your lenses will have.  Tints are not applied to lenses solely for cosmetic reasons.  They’re there to help absorb or reflect light of certain frequencies as it passes through lenses.  Although, it’s a matter of personal preference, choosing colors is crucial and must be dealt with carefully because tinted lenses can come at the cost of some color distortion (which affects driving or looking at traffic lights).  There are still benefits, however.  And depending on the color, it can reduce brightness or glare; provide depth or width; and give more contrast between objects.
  • Ask yourself what you specifically require from your next pair of sunglasses.  Do they have to be fashionable?  Simple or design-laden?  Do they have to be of a certain brand?  Do you want for them to last long time in terms of material, design quality, style and color?  Perhaps you can pick a more reserved color and style to be sure it doesn’t become too dated.
  • Be sure that your shades will fit your head properly and snugly, no matter where you are or what you’re doing.  You wouldn’t want to constantly push them up in place while you’re driving, talking to someone, and the like.
  • Your sunglasses need to be very comfortable so you can wear them for long periods.  Consider the materials used.  Glass lenses and metal frames are heavier than their plastic counterparts.  You may also consider titanium frames which give the durability of metals but the lightness of plastic.
  • You may want to consider getting your next pair from notable brand names.  Examples are Marc Jacobs sunglasses and Oakleys sunglasses. Do some research.  It pays to know more about the manufacturer and their product lines.
  • More than the cost of sunglasses, you should consider its “value for money.”  There’s no point in saving all that money, only to end up buying the cheapest one in the market, one that doesn’t fit, nor suit your face shape.  Pretty soon, you’ll no longer wear it.  Or, worse, they’re already broken.  It’s more sensible to buy quality sunglasses that you took the time to choose, one which is durable, and which you know will be worth it in the long run.

Try following these reminders and you’re sure to have a pleasant and stress-free time choosing your next pair of shades.
