Pet Turtle Advice

Getting a new pet is an exciting thing, and bringing a pet turtle into the house is no exception.  Even though turtles are a different kind of pet than dogs, cats, gerbils, and hamsters, they bring a lot to the table and can be a great pet to have, especially if you have children in the house.  Taking care of a pet like a dog or cat is much different than pet turtle care though, and you should really do some research and reading up on how to best do this.

The first thing you need to consider is where to keep your turtle when you bring him home from the pet store.  Do you want to keep him outdoors or indoors?  Whatever you decide, the most important thing to do is to make sure he has enough room to move around.  It’s a good idea to have a water pit of sorts in your turtle’s cage or tank, and it is a must if you own a water turtle.

Pet turtle food is something that you should really talk to an expert about.  There are all different types of turtles who have different diets, and knowing which kind you have is crucial to what you feed it and its health.  The biggest reason for turtle sickness and death is a diet that is not right for that particular type.  You need to know what and how much to feed your new pet if you want to keep him healthy.  Turtles have lived for up to two hundred years, so if you properly care for him, he can be around for a very long time.   If you notice that your turtle is acting strangely, has cloudy eyes or his skin looks different, it is probably a result of malnutrition.  If you think this is the case, it is best to find a veterinarian who specializes in reptiles.  Take your pet to an expert to get him looked at and back to proper health if you think this is the case.
