Factors Contributing to Thrombosed External Hemorrhoids

Although a lot has been written about hemorrhoids in general, still the disorder is not fully understood. In a paper I found published online by The Internet Journal of Gastroenterology™ ISSN: 1528-8323 the authors Dr. Ole Gebbensleben, York Hilger, and Dr. Henning Rohde tried to find common factors that may be linked to the formation of thrombosed external hemroids (TEH). Although their study only had a total of 148 people which is considered fairly small, they did find some interesting predictors. After all the participants filled out questionnaires and the data was studied, a total of 6 variables were found that allowed the doctors to accurately predict TEH in 80% of the participants.

Three of the factors led to predicting TEH and three were found to negate the diagnoses of TEH. The three predictors were being younger than 46, too much straining while using the bathroom and using both a dry and a wet method to clean up after using the bathroom. The three variables that led to reduced risk of TEH were using shower, using a tub and cleaning the genital at least once a week before going to sleep.

A few things that the study was able to disprove despite previously held beliefs were that these things caused TEH: anal sex, pregnancy, except the actual birthing, alcohol or spicy foods lead to TEH. It’s important to note that this study only involved the study of thrombosed external hemorrhoids so this does not mean that these factors may not be relevant to other types of hemorrhoids.

So, it’s safe to say that fiber is always a good bet to reduce the incidence of hemroids. Since this sample size is pretty small, more studies still need to be done, but this information is interesting and gives us additional insight into a topic that in many ways is still unknown.
