When you purchase a laptop computer it is supplied with a battery provided by the computer’s manufacturer. The ability to operate the computer away from an electrical power source is one of the main advantages of laptop computers over desktop computers. However, the laptop battery that powers portable computers will eventually fail from normal use. This is not a defect in the battery, but only reflects the limited lifetime of the rechargeable battery chemistries that have found mainstream use.

Lithium-ion batteries are standard issue with today’s laptop and notebook computers. They fail after a period of 2 to 3 years under normal usage. And although they fail for different reasons than the older nickel-cadmium battery technology, the fact remains that they will eventually need to be replaced.

When you need to replace your laptop battery, you can shop directly at the computer manufacturer’s site and pay a penalty for this shopping convenience or you can explore your alternatives and look for a cheap laptop battery. A cheaper laptop battery is often available for your computer in the form of a generic equivalent to the OEM (original equipment manufacturer) battery. You will typically find that you will be able to save 50% or more over the OEM battery by selecting a generic battery. This generic battery may have been made at the same plant that made the OEM battery, but the odds are that it was probably manufactured at another facility.

That is why if you decide to buy a generic battery you will want to make sure that it will operate in your laptop computer. The best way to do this is to purchase a battery with a warrantee and test the battery in your laptop or notebook computer shortly after you receive it. If it fails to fully charge or your power management software warns you that there is another problem with the battery, you will want to return this battery for either an exchange or a refund.

So if you find yourself in a situation where you need to start shopping for replacement laptop batteries, realize that although you may save some money with a generic battery you also have an inherent risk of purchasing a substandard battery from a secondary supplier. In my opinion, the cost savings associated with generic batteries is worth the extra effort required to guarantee that your rechargeable battery will operate with your system.
