Choices in Travertine Tiles

If you have decided to invest in a new travertine floor, it may be because you have seen a beautiful floor at a friend’s home or you have come across a picture of this type of flooring in an interiors magazine. You may be surprised then to find out that there are many choices when you go to buy travertine tiles, many of which will be vastly different from the idea you have in your mind of how a travertine tile floors look.
1. Variation in Color
Everything about travertine is natural, of course, so you will only get natural colors. However, those colors range from almost pure white to almost pure black with every natural shade you can think of in between. And the tiles themselves tend to have a marbled effect with a lot of veining so you will get color variation between tiles, which is part of their beauty. No two tiles are exactly alike.
2. Variation in Finish
The surface of travertine tiles is naturally full of indentations, however, during the manufacturing process tiles can be given a number of different finishes. The natural holes can be filled in with a compound made of powdered natural stone or the surface can be left unfilled. The tiles can be buffed to a smooth finish or polished to a high shine. The tiles can even be made more weathered looking by being tumbled with water and rocks. So a tumbled floor will have a country look very different from the highly polished floor you may have seen on your friend’s floor.
3. Variation in Size
Tiles are cut into various sizes from tiny mosaic tiles up to very large tiles only used in large public buildings. The mosaic tiles are often arranged and sold in different patterns on a mesh backing so that gives you yet more choice to make. If you want standard tiles for home use you can buy these in all kinds of sizes too, although 12″ and 18″ are most common.
