Once you hit the age of retirement, a lot of things start changing. For many of us, we have no control over what our body does as we get older, and it can be really frustrating to suddenly find that there are parts of you, that have been working fine for the last 70 or 80 years, that suddenly quit performing, as if they have decided to retire as well.

For me, it was my eyesight. I used to have spectacular eyesight, I could spot a bugs fart from a mile away, but nowadays I’m lucky to see a bug right in front of me. So you know what they did last year? They took away my licence. Tested my eyes, and I couldn’t get past the second line, goodbye driving privileges. The only alternative I have now is to find out where to find used golf carts for sale and start being one of those annoying old people on the footpath.

Old Gas Station Memories

I was out driving in the country the other day with my family and was just taking in all of the sites. Suddenly, off in the distance I saw an old gas station. As we approached, it became clear that it has been abandoned long ago. There was no one around for miles, so I pulled off just to give everyone a chance to stretch their legs.

I walked around the rusted out hulks of antique gas pumps and imagined what this place must have looked like back when it was in its prime. The glass globes which had decorated the tops of these tanks were long gone. Inside the building I could see that there were a couple of old gas station signs that I’m sure someone would pay a pretty penny for if they were listed on eBay. I imagined full service attendants rushing out to check my car’s oil, clean my windshield and fill ‘er up without having to wait for a credit card authorization. It was a different time to be sure.

Should Western Australia Tax 4WDs More?

The Western Australian government is under fire for suggesting to the current tax review that 4WD’s should be taxed more highly than regular cars. It would be good for the Australian car loans business – but would it make sense as a tax?

The problem is that there are really 2 types of 4WD’s in Australia – and its hard to distinguish between. There are the North Shore mum’s 4WD which are all about status – though usually justified by “safety” – and there are real 4WDs. Real 4WDs are bought to work – they live in the bush with farmers and miners. Or they live in suburbia but are used to do heavy duty towing and are taken off-road regularly. They are used for what they are designed for. Maybe there should be a tax on 4WDs which haven’t been off road – ever!
