Black Mold Removal Starts at the Source

Many forms of mold are non-toxic and are more a nuisance than deadly, this is not true with black mold.  Removal should be a priority, because of the dangers involved.  Hiring professionals is the preferred way to go, but many people want to save money and deal with it themselves.  Taking care of the mold is done in two important phases, and safety should always be a priority.  The first step is the removal of the source and the second is to kill off the mold and the spores.

Mold grows in wet damp places and killing off the source could be as simple as installing a dehumidifier or patching a leak.  There is no reason to try and deal with the mold itself if the source is going to continue creating an environment where the stuff can grow back.  Tracking down the source can be difficult as well, because it often goes unseen until it is a major problem.

Once you’ve eliminated the source, you need to move on to clearing out the mold, but you have to be careful with commercial cleaners; many of them will list that they are used for mold removal, but the surfaces they are used on will be listed in fine print on the back of the package.  Because of the nature of black mold you need a product that is useful on porous surfaces; otherwise you will think you’ve killed off the mold, only to find it growing back, due to the clear only removing the surface mold and not the spores that have infested deeper into drywall or wood.

Black mold removal is a serious problem and not something to approach lightly.  Make sure you are ready for the task of dealing with it yourself, otherwise turn to professionals, because this mold is toxic and can cause major health problems if dealt with improperly.
