It is worthwhile noting that the so called asbestos roof tiles and asbestos shingles do not entirely consist of asbestos alone. The truth of the matter is they are primarily made of mineral fiber and cement. Asbestos is added as a bi-product only. The asbestos portion varies by manufacturer and we typically see anything between 5% and 35%. The only way to find out whether our not your roof shingles are made of asbestos and furthermore also assess the percentage, is to order laboratory testing. In other words, you will have to send in a sample to a designated lab and they will send you the test results back. But there are actually different types of asbestos. And the one we usually see in roof shingles or siding is referred to as chrysotile asbestos. In principle, asbestos can be bucketed into two main categories; friable and non-friable. The former refers to the ability of a material being reduced to smaller pieces with very little effort. In other words, if you can crush or break an asbestos product with your hands it is friable.

There is a broad variety of asbestos products which has been extensively used for decades all over the US. They were produced inexpensively and known for their excellent qualities including their thermal resistance and durability.

When more and more people got diagnosed with asbestos induced diseases, the government set forth rules and regulations in relation to the safest possible manner in handling the material. Many homeowners are concerned about their asbestos roofing and therefore decide to remove the potentially hazardous material. It is strongly advisable to higher a specialized and certified asbestos abatement company. Removing the asbestos roof shingles in a do-it-yourself approach is very dangerous. As we learned, the problem starts when the shingles or tiles get damaged and there is virtually no way to not damage them as they get removed. This job requires the appropriate safety gear and furthermore, you need to think about a way to dispose the material properly. If you pay an asbestos removal company to get the job done, you don’t have to worry about any of these things.
